Some Trust In Chariots, Some In Horses But We Trust In The Name Of The Lord
A Devotion For Mamas Who Love Jesus
This devotion is part of my book Faith Alive - A 6-Week Devotional For Mothers which I released at the end of last year.
Focus verse
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God (Psalm 20:7 NIV).
Devotion
Stepping out in faith is as much about stopping as it is about advancing. Stopping our trust in what we know, and advancing in God’s will into the unknown.
When Peter stepped out of the boat in the middle of the storm, he stopped relying on the security of the boat and advanced by putting His faith in Jesus’s command to walk on water. He knew Jesus was his real safety—whether he was in the boat, whether he was walking on the rough waters.
And so it is to be with us. God desires that we see Him as our security. Him as our provider. Him as our source of living water.
It is then, and only then, that we’re able to go without knowing, in obedience to God’s will.
As mothers, God may call us into a season of spending more time with our children, and we will need to trust our Father to provide all the money we need. And then God may call us into another season where we spend more time doing outside work or ministry, and we will need to trust our children to Him.
Whatever God calls us to do specifically, we can be sure that when we see Him alone as our security, we can take steps of faith into the unknown.
Questions for reflection
What are some of the things you tend to see as your security (money, time, relationships, career) instead of God?
How can you grow in trusting in God alone as your security? Think about spiritual practices that will help you get to know God better, and practical steps that will help you rely less on your security objects and more on God.
Prayer
Thank You, Lord, that in You alone I am secure. I’m sorry for the times I trust in other forms of security, for instance ….. (insert things you trust in as your security), instead of trusting in You. Lord, I declare that You are my security. You are my rock. You are my King. Amen!
